Actress Violette Chauveau holds the torch loud and clear in the solo show The final volumewhich is a worthy tribute to the great director André Brassard, who died last year.
Written and directed by Olivier Choinière, this work will be performed at the Théâtre de Quat’Sous, where the famous playwright has directed 16 productions. The piece conveys the fire that animated this stage lover, who emerged as a director at the age of 20 in the 1960s.
“It was about igniting you, not teaching you,” we can hear from the mouth of AB, this fictional character heavily inspired by Brassard, wonderfully portrayed by Violette Chauveau. With her characteristic round glasses, her crowns and her perfectly controlled gestures, the actress, who was her muse in another time, touchingly embodies the man of the theater.
Tapes from the past
The story takes place in the apartment of AB, a completely diminished 75-year-old man who lives alone with his memories. He then remembers his past by listening to tapes he made throughout his life. This intimate diary immerses the audience in his childhood, but also his reflections on art and theater, nationalism and the human soul.
However, his very interesting monologues hardly fill this two-hour show. A large part is devoted to his daily life, which is marked by a series of cigarettes, computer sessions and difficulty getting around. Lovers of silence, stage metaphors and small gestures that underline everyday life are well served. Anyone looking for a consistent story, more detailed monologues and a slightly faster pace will be left wanting more. However, the rarity of AB’s words has the advantage of making them resonate when presented.
The text is lightened with some touches of humor and puns that lighten the atmosphere. Choinière’s production is rich, with a nice balance between realism and absurdity.
Although imperfect, this unique journey into the heart of the universe of the man who has had such a profound influence on contemporary Quebec theater is worthwhile.
The final cassette will be presented at the Théâtre de Quat’Sous until September 30th.
