Every year, dozens of Canadians are killed or seriously injured in railway crossing accidents. Today, as part of its 20th annual Rail Safety Week (September 18-24, 2023), Operation Lifesaver Canada is pleased to announce that 20 additional communities have joined its Watch Community Safety Program. cost. Live. to prevent these senseless tragedies.

This national initiative encourages communities to post bright yellow safety stickers or signs near railroad crossings; Each features the silhouette of a train and Operation Lifesaver’s safety slogan, “Watch.” cost. Live . The stickers and signs are intended to warn pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to be careful near intersections – to prevent tragic accidents.

“It is heartbreaking to see that every year Canadians are killed or seriously injured in avoidable collisions at the intersection,” said Sarah Mayes, national director of Operation Lifesaver Canada. We hope these stickers serve as a constant reminder to be extremely careful when approaching a railroad crossing.

The first Operation Lifesaver stickers were installed in Vancouver in 2018. Since then, almost 100 communities have joined the program. Over the next few days, more than 200 rail safety decals and signs will be unveiled in communities from Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Grand Bay-Westfield, New Brunswick.

The Community Safety Program is just one of the ways Operation Lifesaver Canada wants to say #ENDTragicPaths. Earlier this week, Operation Lifesaver released two new videos telling the stories of people affected by railway crossing incidents and trespassing incidents. One of those videos tells the story of 16-year-old Jacob Hicks, who died in 2012 after being struck by a train at a railroad crossing in Oshawa, Ontario. At the time of the accident, he was on his way home, Jacob was listening to music on his headphones and looking at his cell phone. The lights flashed and the bells rang, but Jacob did not see or hear the arriving train. Her tragic story is exactly the type of accident that Operation Lifesaver’s Community Safety Program is designed to prevent.

Communities can find out more information or join the Community Safety Program by visiting the Operation Lifesaver website.
