An airline spokesperson initially suggested it was a medical issue, but later changed his mind and said it was ultimately a mechanical issue, local station FOX31 Denver reports.

According to records of the pilot’s communications with air traffic controllers, the smell was not smoke but rather something that “indicated that there was some type of contamination in the cabin.”

The airline said in a statement that the plane suffered a “smoke incident that forced a return to Denver and a request for assistance from emergency medical personnel as a precautionary measure.”

No one was injured in this incident and passengers reportedly received no treatment.

A replacement aircraft could be mobilized to enable the passengers to travel to their destination.
