The woman told the BBC that she was working in the same building as the BBC in Los Angeles when the incident occurred, and Brand laughed about it on his radio show moments later.

She did not lodge a complaint, but BBC management was informed of the incident in 2019, although no formal action was taken.

“I’m ashamed, but more than that, I wonder if something had been done, perhaps there would have been fewer women to whom he would have done terrible things, as we now read in the newspapers,” she told the television station.

A joint investigation by The Times, Sunday Times and Channel 4 on Saturday revealed allegations of rape, sexual assault and psychological abuse against Brand by four women.

Brand, 48, denies the allegations, which were allegedly made between 2006 and 2013, and says his relationships have always been “consensual”.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s official spokesman called the allegations “very serious and concerning,” adding that the leader “has made it clear that there should never be room for harassment, no matter where it occurs.”

The brand’s publisher, Bluebird, announced that “all future posts” featuring the comedian had been blocked, while video-sharing platform YouTube had also disabled his content.
