“Stupidly Rich”: All against Wall Street

Remember the story of GameStop’s stock rise? Paul Dano, Shailene Woodley, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan and America Ferrera bring this incredible, mood-lifting story to life.

In English, the title “Dumb Money” brings to mind a phrase used by institutional investors, including mutual fund brokers and other sophisticated speculators, to describe people who gamble on the stock market. Dumb money is, if we translate it literally, “idiot money”, dividends received by chance, by chance. Because the Wall Street specialists, speculators who are making – and above all destroying – the global economy are smart money, intelligent and strategic money… regardless of whether it causes bankruptcies and layoffs.

In this context, in 2021, Roaring Kitty (Paul Dano), Keith Gill’s nickname meaning “roaring kitten”, is active on Reddit and YouTube. This lone stock trader, recording video in his basement, realizes that GameStop stock is undervalued. He decides to buy some when several speculators (played by Seth Rogen and Nick Offerman) bet on the stock’s decline… and the company’s bankruptcy.

Because it has a relatively large audience (the average American is played by America Ferrera, Anthony Ramos, Talia Ryder and Myha’la Herrold, while Shailene Woodley appears as Keith’s wife), GameStop’s stock purchases multiply, resulting in an exponential increase in the stock Stock is up 1500%, which at less than $5 will soon be worth $483. As you can imagine, Wall Street is mobilizing to silence and, more importantly, bring this kitten to the brink. Roaring that disturbs.

With great intelligence, screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo have maintained the humorous, cynical and biting tone of “The Antisocial Network”, the work of Ben Mezrich (yes, he is the author of “The Social Network” by David Fincher was brilliantly adapted for the cinema). ), which served as a starting point. Behind the camera, Craig Gillespie (Me, Tonya, but also the excellent series Pam & Tommy) officiates with infectious enthusiasm – and thought of Cardi B, Reem, Nicki Minaj and Drake in the soundtrack – which is reminiscent of The Big Short: The Heist of The Century or The Wolf of Wall Street, from which we emerge energized… and roaring.

Stupidly Rich opens in Montreal on September 22nd before opening in cinemas across the province on September 29th.
