ABUSE

A disturbing case has deeply shaken the French sports scene in recent weeks.

Angélique Cauchy, a 36yearold former French tennis player, made a shocking statement revealing that she had been the victim of repeated sexual abuse by her coach Andrew Gueddes since she was 12 years old.

She claims to have experienced nearly 400 episodes of abuse over the years. These revelations were presented to a commission investigating “operational deficiencies in sports associations” in France.

Angélique’s testimony led to Andrew Gueddes being sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2021 for rape and sexual assault against four girls between the ages of 12 and 17.

“I told him, ‘No, it shouldn’t, it’s not right.’ I do not want’. He said to me, “You know, this happens a lot in trainertrainee relationships,” said Angélique, who said she was “paralyzed” during the abuse.

After the rapes, she had “dark thoughts” and even thought about suicide.
