Talking on the phone while driving, no seatbelt… These new AI-powered radars will stop violating traffic on the road – CCM

By analyzing the images captured by high-frequency cameras using algorithms, the artificial intelligence integrated into a new type of radar can detect many traffic violations. Beware of violators!

Most drivers are afraid of speed cameras scattered along roads and highways. And for good reason: these devices are able to detect speeding and take photos of offending vehicles day and night, making it possible to issue and send fines to their drivers without human intervention – and without discussion. . It is difficult to escape their zealous and merciless controls unless you use special applications that signal “danger zones”. Especially since speed is no longer the sole focus due to advances in electronics and computer science. In addition to the traffic light radar, which is triggered when a red light is ignored, we now also have to take into account the new anti-noise models that report noise pollution from certain vehicles. And a new generation promises to go even further in the hunt for traffic violations thanks to artificial intelligence.

And it’s not science fiction! For several weeks now, a new type of radar equipped with AI has been being tested in the United Kingdom on the A30 motorway that connects London with Cornwall, more specifically near Launceston in Cornwall. As the BBC explains, the tool is not a classic radar, but a device that combines high-frequency cameras and infrared flashes with an AI image analysis system. Its great strength lies in its algorithms, which are able to detect various traffic violations in images, such as not wearing a seat belt or talking on the phone while driving. Two common offenses that lead to dramatic consequences in accidents… At the moment, the AI does not alone decide on the course of events: it is a human technician who in turn checks the reported and now anonymized processes. to confirm that the motorist spotted was indeed breaking the rules.

And this new system – developed by the specialist Australian company Acusensus, whose motto is “Change behavior to save lives” – is proving to be extremely effective: just three days after it went live, 297 violations have already been registered. 180 links to not wearing a seat belt and 117 to using a phone while driving! And in a fortnight that statistic rose to 1,500 violations, two-thirds for telephone, one-third for belt. We expect that these particularly encouraging results will encourage the UK authorities to continue their testing to improve this system before deploying it on a larger scale.

And it is also easy to imagine that this experiment will give inspiration to other governments that are always looking for solutions to detect traffic violations, especially when they are responsible for deaths and injuries… Several European countries are increasing the number of speed camera tests of the future, like the Velolaser in Spain, a mobile and ultra-compact system – and therefore difficult for drivers to detect – capable of controlling several vehicles simultaneously in both directions of traffic. Or the thermal radar devices tested in Lyon that identify drivers driving alone without passengers in lanes reserved for carpooling. There is no doubt that artificial intelligence will dramatically expand the possibilities of these ECUs in the near future also in France, and not just for speed on the road…
