Canada Soccer: Mauro Biello is not the long-term solution

Canada Soccer has been searching for a head coach for its men’s team since the departure of John Herdman and has no plans to permanently hand over the reins to Quebecer Mauro Biello.

In a press release Wednesday, the association confirmed that the former Montreal Impact instructor would fill the interim role, but that it was still looking to fill the position.

Biello has not been idle since his appointment on August 28th. With Herdman moving to Toronto FC, his assistant was tasked with preparing the players for Canada’s friendly against Japan on October 13. The next major tournament the men’s team could take part in is the Copa America in June 2024.

“This is a unique opportunity and I thank you for it [le secrétaire général par intérim Jason deVos] and the entire Canada Soccer Board of Directors for their support and trust. “I am truly honored to take on this coaching role as our men’s program enters an important qualifying phase for the 2024 Copa Ameerica,” said Biello.

Before selecting a new head coach, Canada Soccer would like to fill the position of general secretary, which should occur by the end of the year. Earl Cochrane, who held those positions, resigned in April.

Biello was hired as Herdman’s assistant in 2018. He previously coached Montreal from 2015 to 2017 and the Canadian U20 from 2022 to 2023.
