Fans are divided over Usher being announced as the halftime show headliner at Super Bowl LVIII, with some even crediting him with “Mr.” “Irrelevant” nickname usually given to the player selected last pick in the NFL Draft due to his lack of new music recently.
On Sunday, the NFL announced the 44-year-old, eight-time Grammy winner as part of its lineup for February’s big game in Paradise, Las Vegas.
It will be the fifth partnership between the league and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation to produce the halftime show, although Usher is not listed as one of the artists signed to the label. The headliner in 2023 was Rihanna, the first year the show was sponsored by Apple Music.
Usher, who has had nine No. 1 hits and 18 in the Top 10 on the Billboard music charts since 1997, has collaborated with some of music’s biggest stars, which no doubt left fans wondering who would be next to him at the Super Bowl. He could appear on stage.
But for now, it seems some of them are dreading the hitmaker’s appearance in five months’ time, while others are feeling nostalgic on social media.
Usher, 45, was announced by the NFL to headline the Super Bowl halftime show this year
The “Yes!” hitmaker teamed up with Kim Kardashian (R) to announce to the world that he will be performing
“Wow, it’s really cool that Usher is doing the halftime show this year!!!” said one user on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I wonder who they’ll pick for the 2007 Super Bowl!”
“This is a terrible act for the Superbowl, no one even says (at the tailgate) ‘Hey can you play against a user,’ ever,” one NFL fan shared. “It’s been a few years since they’ve had a real group that’s huge. ‘I’ll pass.’
“Honestly Usher performing the Super Bowl halftime show will be iconic,” tweeted one fan of the “Yeah!” Singer.
MIXED BAGS: People on social media either praised the NFL’s call or called Usher “irrelevant”
“You couldn’t find anyone better or more relevant than Usher to do the Super Bowl halftime show?” another user pointed out.
“The guy is literally having the biggest show in Las Vegas in the last year and a half,” another replied, referring to Usher’s Las Vegas residency.
Usher has lived in “Sin City” since 2022, but revealed he plans to move by the end of this year, according to TODAY.
