Why does the voting method differ depending on the department?

This is a special feature of these elections. The voting method changes depending on the size of the department. If there are one or two senators in the department, they are elected with a two-round majority. In departments with three or more senators, they are elected by list voting according to proportional representation. How these elections work and all the topics covered in this article.

Why is the abstention rate so low?

If not everyone votes, voting is compulsory for those who are registered, which explains why the abstention rate is generally very low. Eligible voters who do not vote face a fine of 100 euros. For more information, see our article.
