Derek Carr is sacked and goes to the locker room in the third quarter, apparently injured.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr was sidelined with a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Backup quarterback Jameis Winston took his place after being sidelined. When Carr left the game, the Saints were up 17-0 but allowed 18 points in the fourth quarter in an 18-17 loss.

Carr landed hard on his shoulder following a third-and-9 sack with 10:51 left in the third quarter. He remained on the ground for a few minutes while the athletic trainers tended to his shoulder, then ran under his own power to the sideline.

He went to the locker room after spending a few minutes in the injury tent, where he had X-rays taken of his shoulder, according to the Fox broadcast. He was listed as questionable and was expected to return shortly afterward before being later ruled out.

Carr was 13 of 18 for 103 yards and a touchdown before the injury.

Winston took a pay cut to remain with the Saints as a backup after Carr signed a four-year, $150 million contract as a free agent. Winston began both the 2021 and 2022 seasons as the designated starter, but did not finish the season.

Winston’s 2021 season ended after seven games with a torn ACL. The Saints rested him four games into the 2022 season because of back and foot injuries, but he never got his starting job back from Andy Dalton.

Carr was the second Saints player out Sunday after guard Cesar Ruiz left the game early with a concussion.
