9/11 defendant exempt from death penalty for CIA torture and abuse

A US judge has ruled that one of the defendants in the September 11, 2001 attacks will not be sentenced to the death penalty.

Bin al-Shibh is considered an accomplice in the deaths of 2,976 people and is accused of organizing a cell of kidnappers in Hamburg.

The leader of this group grabbed flight number 11 and crashed it into the Twin Towers.

The judge handling the case decided to continue the trial, but exonerated Al-Shibh for the torture he suffered at the hands of the CIA. Academic reports showed last August that the Yemeni prisoner was subjected to all sorts of harassment in police custody.

The torture caused him to suffer from a mental illness or defect that made it impossible for him to understand the legal proceedings against him. According to the various doctors and psychologists who have treated him, in addition to a delusional disorder, he suffers from post-traumatic stress with secondary psychotic features.

As one of the last attempts to change the situation, prosecutors tried to commute the death penalty to life imprisonment. Thus, Washington is exposed for the inhumane treatment of the various prisoners under his command as well as the excesses of the American police.
