The entrepreneur and former Goldman Sachs trader Stefanos Kasselakis was elected president of the Greek left-wing party Syriza and surprisingly won the runoff election after Alexis Tsipras dropped out. The 35-year-old businessman, who has never held political office and spent most of his life in the United States, won 56.69% of the votes cast by Syriza members and became president of the country’s first opposition party: Greece.
Unknown to the general public until a few weeks ago, Kasselakis beat Tsipras’ former Labor Minister Effie Achtsioglou, who was considered the favorite. But last Sunday, Kasselakis surprisingly won the first round against four other candidates, including three former ministers. He is the first openly gay politician to lead a political party in Greece.
