Sophia was due to open a fourth branch of her restaurant chain in Bari, Italy, on Tuesday. The native Italian should also receive honorary citizenship of the city.

According to the publication, the events have been canceled along with her other upcoming public appearances.

It has been reported that Sophia will undergo a short recovery period before undergoing a long rehabilitation process to recover from the surgery.

Sophia was most recently seen in the 2020 Netflix film The Life Ahead, directed by her son Edoardo and which won her a David di Donatello Award for Best Actress.

Speaking to Ew.com, she explained: “I love cinema so much. “I want to keep doing it forever. I know it’s hard to find good stories, but sometimes I fall in love with the right ones. “I plan to make films forever.”

Earlier this year, Sophia was named one of the biggest stars of classic Hollywood cinema. Her most famous films include Two Women (1961) and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963).

She won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1961 for her performance in the war drama Two Women.

When she received the award, she became the first actress to take home the Oscar for a performance that was not in the English language.

Loren’s last public appearance was on September 2nd at the Armani fashion show in Venice, held during the 80th Venice Film Festival.

Sophia looked as glamorous as ever as she arrived at the film festival earlier this month, just days before her 89th birthday.

The showbiz icon appeared to be wearing a blazer and shirt, which she teamed with black trousers and flats, as she waved to nearby fans upon her arrival.

Sophia’s ageless appearance clearly matches how she feels on the inside, as she previously opened up about feeling decades younger.

About aging naturally, she said, “Why change your body and be someone else when you’re happy inside?” I never thought of that – ever. I like what I have. I like myself!’
