That’s what it’s all about
Last night an impressive natural spectacle was observed in Switzerland.
Thanks to a clear night and strong solar flares, the northern lights were visible.
The phenomenon is very rarely seen in Switzerland.
The Northern Lights are generally found in the far north of Europe. But on Monday night the impressive natural spectacle could also be seen in Switzerland. Webcam images from Säntis and Jungfraujoch show the northern lights in the north.
Roger Perret from MeteoNews also talks about a rare result for Switzerland. “For the natural spectacle to be observed in this country, there is no need for cloud cover or strong solar flares,” says Perret. These conditions were met on Monday night. Last night you could even see the red northern lights, which are rarer than the green lights.
Is there another chance tonight?
“Most people associate the Northern Lights with winter, but that’s not true,” says Perret. “Now is the ideal time to observe the Northern Lights. The months of September, October, February or March are considered the best months to see the Northern Lights. If you wanted to watch the Northern Lights last night, you didn’t necessarily have to go to a high mountain. It was already possible to observe the lights on smaller hills – such as Bachtel or Hörnli. It’s important that there is a clear view to the north, says Perret.
Anyone who missed the Northern Lights last night may have another chance in the coming days. Although conditions are no longer as good as last night, sightings are still possible. It should also be clear over the next few nights, but the solar winds will decrease, an important prerequisite for the aurora borealis.
