Czech Republic could restart its own penicillin production

This country has been facing a shortage of antibiotics, including penicillin, for several months, said Valek, who believes that its own production of these drugs can help solve this shortage, emphasized Radio Prague International.

The new director of the State Institute for Drug Trafficking Control, Katerina Podrzilova, has six months to introduce the necessary changes, otherwise it would be advisable to look for another person for this position, she warned.

One of the causes of the deficit of the above-mentioned drugs is their production outside the country, while national pharmaceutical companies point out that self-sufficiency in this area is unlikely, since 40 percent of key components have to be imported.

During the pandemic

Covid-19, this country of just over 10.6 million inhabitants was among the countries with the highest death rate from the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 among European countries, registering four million 647 thousand 121 cases, including 42 thousand 831 deaths.
