Amazon invests up to $4 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic – The Guardian

Amazon

The tech company is catching up after Microsoft struck a deal with ChatGPT developer in January

Amazon will invest up to $4bn (£3.2bn) in startup Anthropic, which created a rival to ChatGPT called Claude, as the Silicon Valley giant seeks to compete with rivals in the race for artificial supremacy like Microsoft and Google to keep up with intelligence space.

Under the deal, Amazon will invest an initial $1.25 billion in Anthropic, founded about two years ago by former research leaders at ChatGPT developer OpenAI, and take a minority stake in the company.

Amazon said its investment in Anthropic, which recently announced its new AI chatbot Claude 2, could be increased to up to $4 billion.

Experts disagree about the threat, but artificial intelligence cannot be ignored

“We have great respect for Anthropic’s team and founding models and believe that by working more closely together, we can help improve many customer experiences in the short and long term,” said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.

Amazon’s move to forge a strategic partnership with a successful AI startup follows Microsoft’s multi-billion dollar deal with OpenAI in January, which included acquiring the exclusive cloud provider.

Under the Amazon agreement, Anthropic will use Amazon Web Services as its primary cloud provider for “most workloads,” although it is not an exclusive agreement, and will use AWS-developed chips in the base models that power its AI Applications are based.

Foundation models are large AI programs that are trained on massive amounts of data, allowing them to be adapted to solve a variety of tasks.

Amazon wants to view its Trainium and Inferentia chips as alternatives to the training and running model chips developed by Nvidia, the early leader in generative AI.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will provide early access to unique “model customization and tuning capabilities” to customers using Amazon’s AWS services.

Anthropic CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei said: “By significantly expanding our partnership, we can unlock new opportunities for companies of all sizes by partnering with them to deploy Anthropic’s secure, state-of-the-art AI systems.” The leading cloud Technology from AWS.”

Anthropic is one of OpenAI’s main competitors in the young but fast-growing AI sector. Last year, Google invested $300 million in Anthropic and the company said it would train its models on Google’s chips and use its cloud services.

In June, another competitor, year-old Silicon Valley company Inflection AI, raised $1.3 billion in funding led by Microsoft and Nvidia.
