Gunmen attack university hospital in Haiti Barron’s

Heavily armed men attacked a university hospital in Haiti on Monday night without causing any casualties, an official with the organization said, marking a new incident in the general violence plaguing the Caribbean country.

The attackers broke into the area around Mirebalais Hospital, one of the country’s largest, between midnight (0400 GMT) and 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday and fired on its facilities, Dr. Reginald Ternier told AFP.

“This morning we observed bullet holes on the facades of several buildings” of the hospital, located just over 50 km from the capital Port-au-Prince, while “the neonatal intensive care unit was damaged,” Ternier told the Specific that large-caliber cartridges were found.

There were no fatalities or gunshot wounds in the incident, although the doctor noted that there was shock to those present at the scene and some material damage.

“Patients, residents and staff suffered the attack in the middle of the night. They are shocked,” he lamented.

Before the attack on the hospital, men with automatic weapons attacked the town of Saut d’Eau, not far from Mirebalais, on Friday. Mayor Marie Andrée Ruth Thelus reported on Radio Magik 9 on Sunday that at least eleven people were dead, dozens injured and several houses burned.

On Monday, the same city was the target of another attack, without further information on the number of victims being released.

Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Caribbean, suffers from gang violence; According to the UN, more than 2,400 people have died since the beginning of the year.
