Last Sunday, on the sidelines of the celebrations that saw the Remparts championship banners raised high above the Videotron Center, the team’s former president, Jacques Tanguay, reiterated how important he believes it is for the city of Quebec to honor Roy’s legacy on the Place Jean immortalized -Béliveau.

” The next [hommage], I hope it will be Jean-Béliveau instead and it should come pretty quickly. He is a hockey icon. He spent as much time as a manager of an ice hockey team as he did as a player. It’s quite a career,” Mr. Tanguay argued.

On Tuesday, Mr Marchand assured that the project was in the pipeline.

“I react very sensitively to it and Jacques had spoken to me about it. The importance that Patrick Roy had throughout his career and his importance in Quebec must be evaluated. […] Can anyone disagree with that? I won’t be the one to dispute that. He deserves his place. Others are there and are exceptional, but even worse than Patrick,” he assured.

No street in his name

However, Quebec’s mayor assured that the city would not rename a street or park in Roy’s honor.

“In toponymy we never name anyone who hasn’t died, and we don’t wish Patrick Roy any misfortune! On Place Jean-Béliveau it’s a different matter. Naming a street or a park will not be possible as our toponymy rules are clear.

“We will sit down with Jacques and see what the reality is. […] We’ll see how we can do it, who can support us financially, what we can build and we’ll talk to Patrick. We are very open to that. »

Recall that the QMJHL announced last Sunday that a trophy in Patrick Roy’s name will now be awarded annually during the regular season to the best goaltender in their circuit.
