The Toronto Blue Jays are just a few wins away from securing their spot in the playoffs, but the New York Yankees, who knocked them out of contention last week, are determined to play spoilsport.
The Jays (87-70) put an end to slim hopes of qualifying for the Bronx Bombers (80-77) by taking home the honor of their three-game series just a few days ago. On Tuesday night, they waited until the ninth inning to earn a 2-0 win at Rogers Center.
The Queen City representatives were confident in their batting this week and have returned to their bad habits. The Yankees’ pitchers limited them to three short hits, those from Bo Bichette, Alejandro Kirk and Matt Chapman. Unlike Jordan Romano (5-7), starter Michael King and his replacements did the opposing batters no favors.
The Canadian substitute is usually very reliable late in the game, but with no lead to protect, Romano was surprised. Gleyber Torres hit a single to first, then Austin Wells found the bullpen’s first pitch to his liking and sent the ball deep into the center field bleachers.
Manager John Schneider can at least be pleased with the performance of starter Kevin Gausman, who was solid through seven innings. He kept the Jays believing for a long time by allowing only three Yankees to hit on safe ground.
This first game of a series of three was presented on TVA Sports. The other two clashes will be broadcast on our airwaves on Wednesday and Thursday from 7pm.
