Kate has fun with teenagers on visit to center for children with special needs

Playful Kate Middleton beamed with joy as she had fun with a group of teenagers during a sensory development course in Kent today.

The Princess of Wales, 41, was in high spirits as she arrived at a local specialist center this morning to take part in a family portage session in Sittingbourne, Kent, as part of her Shaping Us campaign.

The mother-of-three looked chic in a red Zara blazer which she teamed with black trousers and pinned her hair up for the occasion.

During her visit today, the Princess took part in a sensory development course with a group of children with different needs and conditions, including social communication difficulties, autism, complex needs and Down syndrome.

The king quickly made contact with another mother who was sitting cross-legged on a mat in the middle, chatting with the woman and her toddler about how she and her young daughter were using the center.

Kate launched her new initiative, Shaping Us, which she described as her “life’s work,” with a glittering reception in London earlier this year.

Arriving at the outing, she opted for her chic Zara blazer, which she previously wore while supporting the England men’s football team at the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium.

She paired the statement tweed jacket with a camel sweater and dark trousers and completed her look with a pair of practical floor pumps.

Instead of her usual sweeping blow-dry style, the princess neatly combed her hair up and let her trendy bangs fall loosely around her face.

Later today, she will meet parents and their children, as well as some of the frontline practitioners who provide the service, to learn more about Portage and how it supports families in their everyday lives.

It’s all part of Kate’s ‘Shaping Us’ campaign, which the princess launched in February this year. The project is a long-term project for the Princess that begins with a child’s development and the importance of the formative years.

It will “explore in greater depth the importance of a child’s social and emotional world and the importance of relationships, environments and experiences.”

The launch event was attended by newly appointed ‘champions’ from the world of music, science, sport, celebrity and academia, including presenter Rochelle Humes, England football captain Leah Williamson and broadcaster Fearne Cotton.

The multimedia campaign is part of a major initiative by the Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood, launched by the Princess in June 2021, to raise awareness of how our early years shape our lives.

It is scheduled to run for at least five years and was described by a spokesman for Kensington Palace as the Princess’s “life’s work”.

The Princess spoke passionately about the campaign in an open letter published in the Mail on Sunday yesterday, outlining her plan for Shaping Us.

She wrote the impassioned appeal on her laptop as she prepared for the campaign launch, which began with a week-long advertising campaign that included last night’s event at BAFTA.

A far cry from Kate’s sweeping, bouncy blow-dry that has become her trademark, the princess opted for a braided haircut. Reports prepared by the Early Childhood Center have shown that the first five years have a greater impact on future well-being than any other developmental period, as our brains grow faster at this time than any other.

She also hopes to break the cycle for parents who have experienced difficult childhoods themselves.

Palace officials say the idea for the project came about before Kate became a mother.

It’s far from the first engagement for Kate in recent days – the princess has begun the new term with a series of royal visits.

Just yesterday she was given a tour of a textile factory in Leeds to learn more about British industry.

The Princess said she “loved the feel and smell” of freshly woven fabrics as she visited a leading Yorkshire factory that bought out her own family business 65 years ago.

In 1958, her paternal great-grandfather, Noel Middleton, helped sell the family business, William Lupton & Co, to AW Hainsworth in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, after more than 160 years in the business.

The Princess joined a number of children on the mat and threw paper into the air during the session at the center today. Kate, a mother of three herself, chatted to a parent as she attended today’s session. When the Princess decided to visit to highlight the thriving nature of Britain’s textile industry, her busy factory was the obvious choice.

Wearing a green suit from British brand Burberry and matching heels with statement gold jewelry, Kate grabbed a handful of freshly woven merino wool fabric and declared, “I love the feel and the smell!”

Earlier this month, a source close to Kate and William claimed that the couple are “laser-focused” and “know what they want from royal life.”

As they celebrate their first year as Prince and Princess of Wales, the couple have figured out what they want from the role and charted a clear path for the monarchy’s future, those close to them say.

The royal couple have ensured their presence is visible in Wales, supporting the king in his duties, while William is keen to “continue his father’s great work with the Duchy of Cornwall”.

The Princess has dedicated much of her work to understanding the early years and was chatty as she spoke to staff at the center today. Speaking to the Telegraph, a source said the pair “know what they want” when it comes to their working lives, adding that they “edit their own speeches and bombard advisers with questions about every assignment”.

William and Kate, along with their children Prince George, ten, Princess Charlotte, eight, and five-year-old Prince Louis, are setting out to be “the future of the monarchy,” the source added.

“There is a lot for him to understand and although he and his father have worked closely together, there will have been a lot of ‘listening and discussing’ about his future path,” the source said.

“He has this unwavering commitment to duty and service.” “He takes the role extremely seriously and is incredibly focused on working hard but also supporting his father as king,” they added.
