Jodie Foster and Kali Reis appeared in a new preview for HBO’s True Detective: Night County, released on Wednesday.

In the upcoming installment of the series, scheduled to air on January 14, Foster plays Detective Liz Danvers, while Reis plays Detective Evangeline Navarro.

“As the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Arctic research station Tsalal disappear without a trace,” HBO said in a synopsis for the upcoming season.

It continued: “In order to solve the case, [Detectives Foster and Navarro] must confront the darkness they carry within them and deal with the ghostly truths that lie buried beneath the eternal ice.”

The upcoming season is set in Alaska over a 24-hour nighttime period, with the first all-female couple tackling the case.

At the beginning of the clip, Navarro asks Danvers if she ever wants to just get out of the area and “just go out” and “never stop.”

Danvers tells Navarro, “This is Alaska – no one ever really leaves.”

In one picture, another member of the police force can be seen commenting on the unlikely tandem: “I don’t know what the hell they do together – I thought they hated each other.”

The two investigators are seen reconciling past differences and working together to solve the gruesome crime, while at some point Navarro confronts Danvers about withholding information.

The upcoming season also stars John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star LaBlanc as well as Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, June Thiele, Diane Benson and Joel D. Montgrand.

Issa López is the creative force behind the upcoming season, as she is the showrunner and wrote and directed the six-part sequel to the crime series.

“We are thrilled to return to the True Detective franchise and to work with the multi-talented Issa López,” said HBO boss Francesca Orsi.

The series returns to HBO for the first time in four years and marks the first frame since HBO and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto partnered, with Pizzolatto continuing as producer.

The “Night County” season was originally scheduled to air this year but was pushed back to January due to the WGA strike, HBO CEO Casey Bloys said at the Code conference on Wednesday, Deadline reported.

“We filed it in January because I wanted to make sure we had Issa and Jodie Foster available to talk about it,” Bloys said, referring to union rules that prohibit promoting projects during a strike.

True Detective: Night Country begins airing January 14th at 9/8c on HBO.
