The interim government in Burkina Faso confirmed in a press release read out on national television on Wednesday, September 27, that it had foiled “an attempted coup” through a coup on Tuesday, almost a year after Captain Ibrahim Traoré came to power.

“Currently, officials and other suspected actors involved in this destabilization attempt have been arrested and others are being actively sought,” the government continues. He regrets that the perpetrators of this attempted coup “had the dark intention of attacking the institutions of the Republic and plunging the country into chaos.”

Two coups in 2022

On Tuesday evening, thousands of people took to the streets of the capital Ouagadougou to ask for support for Captain Ibrahim Traoré in order to “defend” him in the face of coup rumors circulating on social networks. The government says it wants to “shed all light on this conspiracy” and “regrets that officers whose oath is to defend the homeland made mistakes in an operation of this nature aimed at disrupting the Burkinabe people’s march for… to hinder his and his sovereignty.” complete liberation from the terrorist hordes that seek to enslave him.

This alleged coup attempt comes almost a year to the day after Captain Traoré seized power in a coup on September 30, 2022. At the time, it was the second coup in eight months that Burkina Faso had experienced. Faso, which has been undermined by bloody jihadist violence across much of its territory for nearly a decade.
