North Korea amends constitution to include nuclear policy in text G1

North Korea is about to conduct its seventh nuclear bomb test, allies warn

According to state news agency KCNA on Thursday (18), North Korea has included nuclear weapons policy in the country’s constitution.

Kim Jongun, the country’s leader, even promised to speed up the production of nuclear weapons to deter the US from “provocations.”

The country’s parliament unanimously approved “the crucial point for formulating North Korea’s nuclear policy as the basic law of the state,” KCNA said.

Addressing parliament, Kim said it was important to “accelerate the modernization of nuclear weapons to maintain a decisive advantage in strategic deterrence.”

A year ago, North Korea officially declared through law that it had the right to use preemptive nuclear strikes to protect itself.

Kim called on government officials to “continue to promote solidarity with nations that oppose the hegemonic strategy of the United States and the West.” He criticized trilateral cooperation between the US, South Korea and Japan as an “Asian version of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)”.

“This is simply the worst real threat, not threatening rhetoric or an imaginary entity,” he said.
