ROTTERDAM, Sept 28 (Portal) – Dutch police said a gunman killed a teacher and a local woman on Thursday after opening fire in a classroom on the campus of a university hospital in Rotterdam and in a nearby house.
The 32-year-old suspect, a university student, fatally shot a 39-year-old woman who lived in his neighborhood and seriously injured her 14-year-old daughter, police said in a televised news conference.
After setting fire to the woman’s home, the gunman went to Rotterdam Medical Center University Hospital, where he entered a classroom and fatally shot a 46-year-old teacher.
The man was arrested near the hospital, where he also set a fire. His motive was unknown.
“We were shocked by a terrible incident. Shots were fired at two different locations in the city. Many people witnessed this,” said Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb. “Emotions in the city are very high. My condolences go out to the victims.”
“The suspect was known to law enforcement and was charged and convicted of animal abuse in 2021,” said Hugo Hillenaar, Rotterdam’s chief public prosecutor.
Videos posted online showed police ordering students, some wearing medical scrubs, to run outside as heavily armed arrest teams arrived at the scene. A video showed a man in handcuffs who appeared to be wearing camouflage pants.
According to police, there was no evidence of a second shooter.
