A 16yearold teenager has been arrested on suspicion of felling a historic tree in England in the early hours of Thursday (September 28). The landmark known as Sycamore Gap was approximately 300 years old.

The tree is planted in Northumberland National Park, England, near Hadrian’s Wall.

According to information from the English newspaper The Guardian, the young man is in custody and is giving a statement to the police about the case. The destruction of the tree, whose trunk was broken, caused a wave of excitement.

Sycamore Gap is not only known for his old age, but also became famous for his appearance in the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” starring Kevin Costner.

“This is a worldfamous landmark and today’s events have caused great shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond,” said police representative Kevin Waring.

According to BBC News, the police are looking for new information and relying on tips from local residents to solve the case. However, people in the area said they heard nothing due to strong winds.

“Everyone is in shock. It is one of the most iconic landscapes in the country,” said Tony Gates, chief executive of Northumberland National Park, where the tree is located.
