At the opening of the Russia-Latin America International Parliamentary Conference this Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin described historic Cuban leader Fidel Castro as a “colossus” who worked tirelessly for the common good.

In his speech, the president mentioned Latin American “selfless fighters for justice and social equality” such as Salvador Allende, Ernesto “Che” Guevara and Fidel Castro, names that drew long applause from the audience.

The Russian leader pointed out that this applause spoke for the role of these people and recalled that he had had several meetings with Castro: “He was simply a colossus.” A man who thought about the people every second, and not only to the Cubans. I also thought about all of Latin America and all the people on the planet.”

In conclusion, Putin emphasized that the conscience of the Cuban revolutionary leader was completely focused “on concern for the achievement of the common good and justice.” He was a unique personality. “That’s the kind of people Latin America produces.”
