Rock band KISS received a mixed reception on Saturday when they took to the stage at the AFL Grand Final to headline the pre-match gig.
The rock legends, led by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, delivered a breathtaking performance full of pyrotechnics as they belted out their greatest hits.
While many fans praised the music icons, others were less impressed, accusing the musicians of “lip-syncing” and “mimicking” their songs.
“The KISS lip sync sends me the fuck out,” one person tweeted, while another wrote: “Do you think one of them could maybe pretend to play a little harder?”
A third wrote: “Once again the AFL proves they can’t give the GF proper entertainment.” “This feels like a tribute band.”

Someone else said the KISS performance was “disgraceful” and even went so far as to say the cheers broadcast on TV were “fake.”
“I mean, great performance.” But the fake crowd noise is off-putting. “Definitely lip-sync, but probably safer than a meatloaf rerun,” one Twitter user wrote.
Another said: “I understand the mimes because it’s Kiss, but what about the fake audience acoustics?”
Yet another also mentioned “false cheer” and said he was “inducted to convince me that KISS is better than the loaf.”
Others continued the torrent of hate, with some calling the performance “embarrassing,” “horrible,” and “horrible.”

Some even went so far as to say they preferred Robbie Williams as the opening act with Delta Goodrem at last year’s Grand Final.
One viewer cruelly suggested that he would “prefer Meatloaf at this point,” referencing the rock legend’s disastrous opening act in 2011.
It wasn’t all bad news for KISS, however, as some loyal followers raved about their favorite rock band.
“I’m sorry for the previous ones.” “KISS just ripped all the entertainment off the stage before the Grand Final,” one person said.
“The KISS opening was fucking ELITE!” another commented, while someone else tweeted: “Confirmed – Kiss are way better than Meatloaf.”
“I mean KISS is a pretty great group for pregame, good job AFL,” one fan pointed out.

While many fans debated how well KISS performed on the big stage, others focused on more important things.
“Who should be responsible for filming the KISS guitar smash?!” Channel 7’s reporting completely missed the mark. “You had a job,” one person said.
“Great direction from Channel Seven who didn’t make it – Paul Stanley broke his guitar – he’s probably only been doing it for 30 years,” wrote another.
A third added: “This is the worst cameraman.” Showing everything except what people wanted to see. Paul smashes his guitar! The cameraman had ONE job. Jesus.’

Just before the band took to the stage ahead of the big game, Paul Stanley told Channel Seven: “This is exciting for us because we’re new to football.”
“It’s brutal compared to what we’re used to. Hopefully we can warm up well.”
The global superstar was also full of love down under, saying he always misses Australia when he leaves and has been thinking about buying a house in the country.
“Since we first came to Australia in 1980 it was known as Kiss-teria. “I looked at houses,” he said.
“You have the most amazing country here.” Maybe it’s a big secret because people don’t realize that this is in the best possible way… This is God’s country.
“It doesn’t get any better than this.” I’ll miss it, but I’ll make sure I come back. I’m already making plans to come back.’

AFL confirmed earlier this year that KISS would play in the 2023 Grand Final as part of their global End of the Road farewell tour.
They took over the headline slot at the big event after New Zealand icons Crowded House pulled out of the flagship sporting event.
The American rock icons, led by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, recently promised to deliver a groundbreaking performance.
“Bombastic will be the word of the day,” Stanley boasted.
“And we’re going to have a no-fly zone over the stadium because we’re going to blow up a lot of stuff.” “Subtlety is not our strong suit.”
“We’re really going to step it up.” “It’s anyone’s guess,” Simmons added.

KISS even brought in young backup dancers to enhance their breathtaking performance
You could see Gene towering over the dancers during his performance
For dramatic effect, colorful smoke was emitted from a spot behind the band and dancers
Thousands filled the stands to watch the legendary rock legends perform
In silver and black ensembles, KISS wore their iconic black and white face paint
Pyrotechnics were also used in the stadium
The fireworks exploding over the field shocked the crowd in attendance
While many fans were thrilled to hear that the rock legends would be playing instead of “some unknown Australian band,” others weren’t as impressed.
Some even compared it to Meat Loaf’s disastrous performance in the 2011 Grand Final.
“Really… Meat Loaf wasn’t bad enough?” one fan posted.
“Woah! Four meatloafs at once!!’ added another.
“Will be Meat Loaf 2.0,” another posted.
Meat Loaf’s performance at the AFL grand final in 2011 was the subject of controversy at the time due to the musician’s subpar performance.
Despite his legendary rock status, his performance during the halftime show was met with heavy criticism due to his vocal problems and erratic behavior on stage.
The event remains a notable moment in AFL Grand Final history and sparked frequent debate over the choice of half-time entertainment.
The aging rocker hit back at the time, calling the AFL “the cheapest people I’ve ever seen in my life” before blaming a bleeding vocal fold for his miserable performance.
Like Meat Loaf, KISS is a musical group that found great popularity and recognition in the 1970s and 1980s.
The rock band’s top hits, including Rock and Roll All Nite and Detroit Rock City, made them one of the best-selling acts in music history.
They achieved over 100 million record sales worldwide with 44 albums.
KISS’s enduring influence on the rock music landscape and their larger-than-life image have firmly established them as rock and roll legends.
