NHL: This Quebecer makes a good impression in Calgary

Quebecer Jérémie Poirier did not go unnoticed on Friday evening in the first preseason game he played with the Calgary Flames.

The 21-year-old defenseman had an assist in the 2-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. The young man thought he had scored with a shot from the point, but the puck hit his teammate Elias Lindholm before it made it into the net.

“It’s a good goal for him and I accept the assist,” said Poirier with a smile, whose comments were reported by the Sportsnet network.

The Valleyfield native played his first game of the preseason schedule after suffering a knee injury early in training camp.

“I feel comfortable in my body for the first time in a long time. The ability to get on the ice and feel comfortable is really encouraging. »

Flames head coach Ryan Huska liked what he saw from Poirier.

“We see that he is talented and good with the puck,” he said.

“The hardest thing for him was that he missed the start of camp due to his injury and things moved a little quickly at times. We need to improve him but I think he did a good job today [vendredi] “Huska continued.

Poirier was drafted by the Flames in the third round (72nd overall) of the 2020 amateur auction. Last year in the American League, he hit the target nine times and had 32 assists for 41 points in 69 appearances. His performances allowed him to be selected for the developmental circuit’s all-star rookie team.
