Fear of Slovakia’s pro Russian turn

Former Prime Minister Fico has a good chance of returning to power in today’s parliamentary elections. Opponents fear that he wants to change policy towards Ukraine. But some analysts think he could be “pragmatic” after a victory.

Politicians and journalists have never tired of talking about a “choice of destiny” and a “decision of course”. They even went so far as to portray the elections as a “fight for democracy in Slovakia”. Today, Saturday, Slovakia’s 4.4 million voters will elect a new parliament. And the question is whether, after the voters’ decision, a broad coalition of several bourgeois parties with possible social democratic participation will govern Bratislava; or whether the former left-wing nationalist head of government, Robert Fico (59), will return to power.
