Tesla launches Model Y update with ambient lighting and new wheels in China – TESLARATI

Tesla China has released a small update for the Model Y crossover in China. The vehicle features a number of small but notable exterior and interior changes that allow Tesla China to start the fourth quarter with good performance.

At the start of the fourth quarter in China, Tesla rolled out an update to its Model Y configurator. As can be seen on the vehicle’s order page, the base model Y from Giga Shanghai now accelerates slightly faster from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The base Gemini wheels are now also painted black, making them slimmer and more attractive.

A look inside the vehicle shows that Giga Shanghai’s updated Model Y now features ambient lighting in the form of an LED strip that stretches across the dashboard. The iconic wood paneling of the Model Y’s black dashboard interior has also been replaced. Most importantly, the price of the base model Y in China remains the same at 263,900 RMB (US$36,100).

A look at the Model Y update that Tesla China just released suggests that the electric vehicle maker is looking to keep sales of its best-selling all-electric crossover strong for the foreseeable future. With the introduction of the Model 3 Highland, the Model Y’s design is looking a bit dated, but this small update makes the vehicle a little more compelling.

It should be noted that this is most likely not the highly anticipated “Project Juniper” update for the Model Y that was mentioned in previous reports. Details on Project Juniper are scarce, but expectations are high that it would translate the Model 3 Highland’s exterior and interior changes into the all-electric crossover. This latest Model Y update in China could therefore be viewed more as a small update between the current generation Model Y and Project Juniper.

There are a few details about this small update to the Model Y that stand out. For one, the base model Y’s 0-62 mph time has dropped to 5.9 seconds, making it quicker than the base model 3 Highland, which has a 1-62 mph time of 6.1 seconds. This is very interesting because the Model Y is a larger and heavier car than the Model 3.
