The Himba tribe, who live in Cunene in northern Namibia, have a somewhat unusual practice. To ward off negative feelings of jealousy, men have the habit of offering their wives so that they can have sex with visitors.
The discovery of this picturesque fact was made by blogger Wode Maya from Ghana, who visited the tribe. He confirmed the practice, but assured that he had not received the offer of sex. “Men give away their wives to visitors, but not to ordinary visitors like me,” he said.
“If you are Himba and visit another Himba house, the resident will offer to satisfy the visitor to his wife rather than be cheated on by her,” he added.
The tribe, which lives in an isolated region of Africa, has an estimated population of about 50,000. There, “sex outside of marriage” is seen as something liberating, according to a report in the Daily Star.
The practice is called Okujepisa Omukazendu. The woman stays in one room with a visitor while the man sleeps in another if there is no room, he can rest outside the house.
In the tribe, women have little influence on daytoday activities and are offered voluntarily by their husbands.
In addition, there is another peculiarity of the Himba group, in which polygamy is socially accepted: women are not allowed to bathe in rivers. For washing they use a smoker with herbs and butter. The ancient people said that this was due to the scarcity of water in the area and over time it became a tradition.
