“13 bodies were recovered, of which only three were identified. DNA testing is required to identify the other ten. So there are three missing, however, no other human remains have been found at the moment in the area affected by the fire,” said the mayor of Murcia, Josè Ballesta. A fire that broke out at dawn this morning in a nightclub in southern Spain and three adjacent ones rooms, claimed heavy victims. A night that turned into a tragedy when a fire broke out around 6 a.m. and devastated the nightclub “La Fonda”. Contrary to what was originally reported, the flames did not come from the “Teatre” venue, but from the neighboring one. From there they spread to two neighboring rooms. All the victims were in “La Fonda,” as the police confirmed. “I have already requested all the information and documents about the discos: I can assure that everyone “Whoever does not follow the rules will be brought to justice,” the city’s mayor added. “So far we have been thinking about helping the relatives of the victims, then we will work on responsibilities. But no matter what it costs, we will work everything out until the end.”

What we know

The flames were extinguished by the fire department and the police are investigating to clarify the dynamics of the fire, which are still unclear. In addition to the victims, there are also some injured people, currently four: two women aged 22 and 25 and two men aged 41 and 45, all intoxicated by smoke. Vice President Yolanda Diaz spoke on X on behalf of the government: “We are following the news of the tragedy in Murcia with concern. My condolences go out to all those affected and my condolences go out to their families.”

The disco “Teatre” also burned down in 2009

This morning’s fire is not the first to rock venues in the area: back in June 2009, some cables in the theater’s facade caught fire and forced the venue to be evacuated. This time too, everything indicates that the cause of the disaster could have been a short circuit, although according to the fire department we have to wait for further tests to be sure. Apparently the flames spread to the ground floor and then quickly caused the ceiling to collapse on people. Meanwhile, the Murcia region has declared three days of national mourning.
