An endangered Sumatran rhinoceros smallest and hairiest of the four rhinoceros species present, was born in Indonesia. The information was released by the country’s authorities on Monday morning (2).

The young animal weighs around 27 kg still unnamed was born on the grounds of the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS), in Way Kambas National Park, Lampung Province, in the tropical country of Southeast Asia.

Covered with black hair, the newborn remained standing for almost 45 minutes after birth. The next day she began walking through the jungle, the Environment Ministry said in a statement.

The mother, 22yearold Ratu, is in healthy condition, the ministry said. She is originally from Lampung, while her companion, 23yearold Andalas, was born at the Cincinnati Zoo in the United States but has since moved to the same park as Ratu.

The duo previously had Delilah in 2016 and Andatu in 2021.

“This is welcome news, not just for Indonesia but for the world,” Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya said in the statement.
