An 81-year-old man is said to have strangled his wife at a retirement home in Terrebonne on Montreal’s North Shore over the weekend. He then allegedly tried to commit suicide by swallowing medication.

The crime was committed on Saturday in a retirement home on Rue Yves-Blais.
At around 6 p.m., police were called to one of the rooms at Maison L’Étincelle, which houses elderly people with cognitive disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
On scene, patrol officers discovered two unconscious people, a 79-year-old woman and her 81-year-old partner.
The septuagenarian was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man was taken to Pierre-Le Gardeur Hospital.
According to our information, the octogenarian strangled his wife, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He is then said to have taken several tablets in order to take his own life.
“This 81-year-old man is considered a suspect in the incident and is currently under police surveillance in the hospital,” said Capt. Vincent Charbonneau, spokesman for the Terrebonne/Sainte-Anne Intercommunal Police Service. -des-Plaines/Bois-des-Filion.
On Monday morning, the octogenarian was still unconscious in the hospital, but was said to be in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.
Investigators are currently looking for evidence and clues to explain this femicide and clarify the circumstances.
