The application opened on Monday (August 2); At least 218 yes votes are required to continue the process
The President of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, opened a vote this Tuesday (October 3, 2023) on whether he will continue to hold the office. The lawsuit was filed on Monday (October 2) by Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz. At least 218 yes votes are required to continue the process.
Gaetz’s decision came after the US Congress passed a bill that temporarily releases funds for the country’s federal agencies and agencies to prevent a “shutdown.”
McCarthy tried to implement a package that did not take into account the interests of Democrats who voted against his proposals. Meanwhile, the more conservative side of the Republican Party deemed the budget cuts inadequate and also rejected the proposal.
At a meeting with Republicans, Gaetz was asked who would replace McCarthy. He said a new election was necessary but did not nominate anyone for the position, according to CNN.
If more than five Republican members vote against the House speaker, he would need the votes of some Democrats to stay in office.
Republican Rep. Patrick T. McHenry, one of McCarthy’s closest allies, told the Washington Post that he should not offer Democrats anything in return for their votes. Instead, he argued that a “functioning fundraising process” and a speaker who “treats the minority party fairly” were sufficient incentives to keep McCarthy.
