More than 60 children at a primary school in Jamaica were hospitalized after eating marijuanalaced candy, Education Minister Fayval Williams said on her social media page X (3) on Tuesday. According to her, some students vomited and even had hallucinations.

“I am confident that together we will strengthen our security system to combat the illegal sale of marijuanainfused products to children,” Williams said.

On Monday evening (2), Williams shared a picture with a colorful packet of candy, each containing 100 milligrams of THC a substance found in plants of the cannabis genus. The amount of THC is considered a high dose even for adults.

“One little boy said he only ate a piece of candy,” Williams said, adding that several schoolage children were given intravenous fluids to speed recovery. “This shows how effective this product is.”

Jamaica decriminalized the possession of up to 57 grams of marijuana for religious, medical and scientific purposes in 2015 and established a licensing agency for the country’s legal medical cannabis industry.

Radio Jamaica reported that the Jamaica Ganja Growers and Growers Association is proposing a public education program on responsible adult consumption and preventing consumption by children, and is advocating for stricter packaging regulations.
