Grandparent fraud: 13 criminal group suspects arrested –

No fewer than 13 suspects are in the crosshairs of investigators from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), who are leading a major operation on Wednesday morning against a criminal organization that specializes in defrauding senior citizens.

Around fifty police officers from the SQ, the Montreal City Police Service, the Laval Police Service and the Richelieu-Saint-Laurent Intermunicipal Police Board were mobilized for this operation.

A total of 13 arrests are planned in Montreal, Laval, Saint-Laurent, Kirkland and Chambly in connection with “grandparent” fraud cases, the victims of which are mainly located on American territory.

Several American police forces also took part in the operation, including the Chicago Police Department, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and prosecutors.

The SQ urges citizens to “remain particularly vigilant of any scams that they may fall victim to.”
