In images shared by news outlets, including Portal, the bus could be seen falling on its side, although it did not appear to be moving but rather standing still. A few moments earlier, another bus arrives behind him, but it is impossible to tell from the camera angle whether there was a collision between the two vehicles.
The tourist bus fell ten meters, killing 21 people, including several children, and injuring 15 passengers.
The accident occurred shortly before 8:00 p.m. on a straight and normally busy road that connects the Mestre district with the historic center of Venice and runs along a railway line.
Five Ukrainians, a German and the Italian bus driver were among those killed, Venice prefect Michele Di Bari, the local Interior Ministry representative, said on Wednesday. He did not comment on the nationality of the other people killed.
One of the hypotheses is that the driver felt unwell, according to Italian authorities, who are waiting for further witness statements and images of the accident.
Among those injured in the accident were four other Ukrainians, two Spaniards, two Austrians, a German, a Croatian and a Frenchman.
The bus took tourists back to a campsite in nearby Marghera after a day in Venice.
