President of Peru awaits green light for trip to Europe

The president plans to be away between October 11th and 15th to visit the Vatican, Italy and Germany, and while waiting for permission she discussed what she thought was the relevance of the trip.

Faced with opinions that see his departure as unnecessary, he cited the need for so-called presidential diplomacy, through which he said contacts at the highest level could not be made by foreign ministers or other ministers.

“Presidents don’t meet with prime ministers or chancellors, they meet president to president; “It is important that the president goes abroad to achieve bigger and better investments for Peru,” he explained.

On the agenda of the trip for the criticized ruler is an unofficial audience with Pope Francis and the Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin as well as contact with German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeie, who is not head of state, and in which he will take part in a business meeting.

“The visit that we will pay to the German President also serves to advocate for greater investments in Peru,” he added.

In Rome, the head of state’s program does not include any contacts with the government and only plans a meeting with the United Nations Director of Food and Agriculture, Qu Dongyu.
