Rescue operation to search for attack victims in Ukraine
According to the country’s authorities, at least 49 people died this Thursday (5) in a Russian missile attack on a village in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine.
This is Russia’s deadliest attack on Ukraine this year. One of the victims is a 6yearold boy.
Kharkiv region governor Oleh Synehubov said the rocket hit a cafe and market at 1:15 p.m. (7:15 a.m. Brasília) when those establishments were full.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in Spain for a meeting of European heads of state and government. He gave the first information about the attack.

Russia also carried out attacks that night. At least two people were killed in shelling in the southern city of Kherson on Thursday morning, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The Ukrainian military said air defenses shot down 24 of 29 drones used in attacks on the southern Odessa and Mykolaiv regions and the central Kirovohrad region.
Russia is continuing its attacks on southern Ukraine, home to Ukraine’s Black Sea and river ports, but has provided few details about the latest wave of attacks, which Kiev said were focused on port and grain infrastructure.
“The enemy continues its attempts to destroy the port and other infrastructure in the south, and also terrorizes the central regions,” the military command in southern Ukraine said.
Nine of the destroyed drones were shot down over the Kirovohrad region, said regional governor Andriy Raikovych.
He said on the messaging app Telegram that an infrastructure facility had been hit and that rescue workers were battling the resulting fire, but gave no further details about the damage. He reported that there were no injuries.
Kherson region governor Oleksandr Prokudin gave few details about the bombing in Kherson but said a man and a woman died and another man was injured.
A 64yearold woman was also injured in early morning shelling in the town of Nikopol in the central Dnipropetrovsk region, regional governor Serhiy Lysak said, adding that 10 buildings, power lines and a gas pipe were damaged.
Russia has carried out frequent air strikes since its fullscale invasion began in February 2022, and Ukraine has launched a counteroffensive in the south and east that it says is progressing gradually.
Although Moscow denies targeting civilians, many have been killed in attacks on residential areas as well as energy, defense, port, grain and other facilities.
