Development on Cyberpunk 2077 may now be fully complete following the release of Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty, but as part of this redemption arc, CDPR has just announced that a live-action project for Cyberpunk 2077 is in the works.
The project is being created with Anonymous Content, which has produced series such as True Detective and Mr. Robot as well as films such as The Revenant and Spotlight. It will be “a live-action project set in the world of his best-selling video game, Cyberpunk 2077.”
That line alone tells me that this almost certainly won’t be a direct adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 starring V, Johnny and all the others. Rather, a new story in the same universe, similar to what CDPR has already done with the Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and its first novel, Cyberpunk 2077: No Coincidence. Just like people like V, CDPR wants to expand the world of cyberpunk and Night City. At least we assume this will be the case in Night City.
It’s not confirmed whether it’s a show or a movie, but given the state of content production in 2023, I’d lean towards a show rather than a blockbuster movie. And given that CDPR already has a good working relationship with Netflix, I think you can see where this could go. However, such a partnership has not yet been announced. I would hope for HBO instead.

There are no details about the rest of the release, other than the fact that it is a live-action, created in collaboration with Anonymous content and is “developed in close collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team.” So you don’t just give the IP away to a bunch of random generators who didn’t work on the game and its various memorable storylines.
While I don’t think this story will focus on V or the game’s adaptation, I wonder if we could at least see some crossover characters. The Night City cast is huge and it seems like there’s an opportunity there. Or you know what they could do is a series that doesn’t focus on V, but a prequel or continuation of the game’s story with Judy or Panam in the lead role. I’m just saying it.
While adapting video game projects remains relatively difficult, the industry is better at it than it used to be, as we’ve seen with everything from Sonic to The Last of Us to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Hell, even Twisted Metal was good. So yes, I’m looking forward to it, but it will probably be years before anything is ready for release.
