A military academy in Homs, Syria, was attacked while it was hosting a promotion ceremony for its officers on Thursday, October 5. The consequences of this attack by explosive drones are high: according to the latest figures from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), at least 100 people died. Half of the victims were army graduates and about fifteen were civilians who came to the ceremony, the NGO said.
The attack has not been claimed, but the army attributes it to “terrorist organizations.” Jihadist groups control part of Syrian territory and sometimes use armed drones. The Syrian regime vowed to respond “firmly” to “this cowardly, unprecedented terrorist attack.” The answer came on the same day: According to the OSDH, the Syrian army was still carrying out heavy bombings in the Idlib region, the last rebel stronghold in Syria. Local residents told the NGO that four civilians had been killed.
Homs became a stronghold for Syrian rebels after the pro-democracy uprising in 2011 before it was recaptured by government forces six years later. As its academy was attacked on Thursday, Turkey carried out new attacks on Kurdish towns in the country’s northeast, leaving at least nine people dead. Ankara said it was in retaliation for the attack on the Interior Ministry in Ankara on Sunday that left two police officers injured.
