This year’s Nobel laureates will receive an additional 1 million crowns, bringing the reward to 11 million Swedish crowns (US$986,000), the Nobel Foundation, which administers the prizes, said on Friday (6).
The prize money has been adjusted up and down in recent years, and prize organizers said they would increase the amount this year to reflect the foundation’s improving financial position.
In 2012, the prize money was reduced from 10 million crowns to 8 million crowns as the foundation wanted to strengthen its finances. The value of the prize was increased to 9 million in 2017 and 10 million in 2020 where it was before 2012.
However, the Swedish krona has lost around 30% of its value against the euro over the last decade, meaning the recent price increase won’t make winners outside Sweden much richer.
In 2013, the Awards for Achievement in Science, Literature and Peace first presented in 1901 were worth about $1.2 million, although the Swedish currency amount was cut to 8 million kroner.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was the first of this year’s awards and was announced on October 2, followed by Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Peace in the following days.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize is unclear. The winner will be announced this Friday (6) in Oslo, the capital of Norway, but there is no indication as to who might win the honor. According to the director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Dan Smith, “The sad reality is that there will not be much progress in world peace in 2023, a year marked by humanitarian crises, coups and wars.” Nevertheless, there will be speculated about some names. In 2021, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Russian journalist Dmitri Mouratov (left), who was awarded together with Filipino journalist Maria Ressa (right). The following year, the award was given to Belarusian activist Ales Bialiatski, a critic of President Lukashenko, as well as human rights organizations in Russia and Ukraine. Now the committee might be tempted to look at another geographical area, such as the Middle East, where women’s rights are constantly being violated. Another name mentioned by the director of the Olso Peace Research Institute is Mahbouba Seraj, a 75yearold Afghan journalist and women’s rights activist. Afghanistan has been in a humanitarian crisis since the Taliban came to power on August 15, 2021. The fundamentalist group took away women’s basic rights such as studying and visiting various public spaces
Dan Smith, director of the International Peace Research Institute in Stockholm, said he would be more inclined to award the prize to an initiative against climate change, an issue considered urgent today. He mentions the “Fridays for Future” movement, inspired by Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, as well as Brazilian leader Raoni Metuktire, who advocates for the rights of indigenous peoples against deforestation. Ukraine’s President Volodmir Zelensky is online betting sites’ favorite to win this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. Still, experts say it’s unlikely the honor would go to a leader of a country at war. There is a possibility that the Nobel Committee will not award the Peace Prize this year, although the risk is low. The committee does not like “empty years” and views them as an admission of failure. The last time this happened was in 1972
