At a meeting in California, the USA and China want to resolve conflicts and stabilize relations
The White House is planning a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The meeting is scheduled to take place in November in San Francisco, California. The aim is to stabilize relations between the two countries. The information comes from the Washington Post, citing US government officials.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to Washington next week. The details of the meeting between the presidents must be determined after this visit.
If confirmed, the facetoface meeting between Biden and Xi will be the first in a year. The only time they spoke in person was during the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November 2022. At that time, they promised “continuous and honest dialogue.”
Although they had been preaching for a closer and friendlier relationship, an alleged Chinese spy balloon was seen flying over the US in February this year, causing new tensions between the countries.
In June, Biden called Xi a “dictator” at a fundraiser and said the Chinese would have been “very embarrassed” by the shooting down of the spy balloon.
China’s Ministry of State Security published a post on social network WeChat in September saying that a meeting between Xi and Biden would only take place if the US “shows sufficient sincerity.”
To ease tensions, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and climate envoy John Kerry have visited Beijing in recent months. National security adviser Jake Sullivan also met with Wang in Malta.
