Spain strengthens its relations with the Pan American Health Organization in the areas of transplantation, HIV, tuberculosis and malaria

Acting Secretary of Health José Miñones met this Friday with the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Jarbas Barbosa, to strengthen ties in promoting transplantation, responding to HIV and its stigmatization, and global commitment to health, contributing to the eradication of Tuberculosis and malaria or the implementation of One Health initiatives.

At this meeting, held in Buenos Aires as part of the V World Summit on Mental Health, which is taking place this week in the Argentine capital, Miñones reiterated Spain’s support for the Americas region in the health sector and shared with the Director of PAHO Spain’s priorities in the EU Council Presidency and the calendar of high-level meetings (RAN).

Among the areas of cooperation, the minister highlighted the promotion of transplantation, where the Spanish model serves as a reference, as well as digital health, the response to HIV as a public health problem and overcoming the stigma associated with the disease, as well as the commitment to global Health and contribution to the eradication of tuberculosis and malaria or the implementation of One Health initiatives.

Miñones and Barbosa agreed to point out the importance of vaccination campaigns, with equally important examples such as the donation of vaccines against Covid-19, which has allowed the allocation of more than 70 million doses since July 2021.

Likewise, the Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with PAHO to carry out Ibero-American Donation and Transplant Network/Council (Rcidt) activities.
