“It is the first time that a Portuguese-speaking city has been chosen as the World Book Capital,” underlines a UNESCO statement, which speaks of a “historic milestone.”
The former capital of Brazil, famous for its beaches, carnival, Sugar Loaf and even Christ the Redeemer, will be the 25th city to hold the title, after Madrid in 2001.
Since this year, cities around the world have followed one another, including Alexandria (2002), New Delhi (2003), Bogotá (2007), Buenos Aires (2011) and the Mexican Guadalajara (2022). The current location is Accra.
“Books are important tools for accessing, sharing and promoting education, science, culture and information around the world,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

The celebrations in the city of Rio will begin on April 23, 2025 and are intended to contribute to “literacy, education and the fight against poverty,” according to the Paris-based UN agency.
