A couple was eaten by a bear in a Canadian nature reserve. The deaths of Doug Inglis and Jenny Gusse, both 62, sparked shock as they were actually calling an uncle while being attacked by the animal.

“I got a message saying ‘Serious bear attack,'” Doug Inglis’ uncle told the Canadian newspaper Calgary Herald. Their dog also died along with the couple.

When Canadian authorities arrived at the scene of the accident in Banff National Park, the couple and their dog were already dead. The bear, a 25yearold female, was found and killed by hunters.

Doug Inglis and Jenny Gusse were on the seventh day of their trip when they were killed by the bear. An empty can of bear spray was found in the tent where they were staying. The product would have been used, but it did not intimidate the animal.

The story of Doug Inglis and Jenny Gusse is reminiscent of the events in the documentary “The Bear Man” (2005) by German filmmaker Werner Herzog.

Winner of more than 22 trophies at international film festivals, the production chronicles the deaths of environmental activists Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard by a bear in Alaska in 2003. The documentary features shocking audio recordings of the animal’s attack. Check out the trailer:
