Poland and Hungary reject summit declaration on migration

EU leaders are giving momentum to the issue of enlargement. On the other hand, Hungary and Poland prevent a joint declaration on migration policy.

Vladimir Putin makes this possible: The Russian attack on Ukraine is forcing EU states to seriously address the issue of admitting new member states. Friday’s informal meeting of Heads of State and Government in Granada proved that, after years of avoiding serious discussions on EU enlargement policy, there is once again enough will in capitals to make membership possible.

After 20 years of maneuvering, the Union must ensure that Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia can effectively become members of the EU if they meet the accession criteria, the Chancellor said German Olaf Scholz. In light of Russian aggressiveness, the same should also apply to Ukraine and Moldova and “in the future” to Georgia.
