Every year the US State Department announces the opening of the Visa lottery, usually in autumn. For a limited time, citizens of eligible countries can apply online for free. It is important to note that not all countries are eligible and the list of eligible countries may change from year to year.
After the registration period has expired, a random selection process will be carried out in which all valid applications will be assigned confirmation numbers. A certain number of applicants from each geographical region are then randomly selected and offered the opportunity to apply for one Diversity visa.
